About the Swedish Census 1890

The Swedish Census 1890...

Since 1749 there have been population censuses in Sweden. Swedish censuses had often been extracts from the household examination rolls (husförhörslängder) made by the Swedish   State Church. The population were here registered in their home parishes with name, year of birth, parish of birth, gender, occupation and marital status. The Swedish Census of the past is just like a modern telephone directory, where you can find the Swedish population - not in alphabetic order - but by place of residence.

...has been digitized

In 1994 ARKION (a division under the National Archives of Sweden) started a project of digitizing the Swedish Census of 1890. The work has continued and the database now includes the censuses of 1900, 1890, 1880 and 1870.

...and is now presented on the Internet.

Five counties from the Census 1890 - about 800.000 persons - has since 1998 been made accessible on the Internet by the Research Archives at Umeå University. In this database it is possible to search for persons or groups of persons by the following variables: home parish, residence, first name, last name, year of birth, parish of birth, occupation, marital status and gender. It is also possible to produce statistics from the database.
